Generally, students have so many questions regarding the “CBSE evaluation process” in their minds. How strict is the process? Are the marking criteria lenient or very difficult? What should be the strategy to face the evaluation process of CBSE? And many more. So, here all your doubts will be cleared in the best possible way.

How Strict Is Really The CBSE Evaluation Process – Class 12th?

For those who are thinking that the CBSE Evaluation process is strict, here is the true story of mine which will prove you wrong.

I was in my 1st year of graduation, and there was a good friend of mine in 12th science stream named Akash, he still lives in my neighborhoodHe was intelligent enough to be the topper of his class.

I have still a memory of that moment when Akash met me after giving his Physics Board exam and said “Yaar Ek 5 number ka question chhooth gaya“. He was a little upset and worried about that particular question and ultimately for his marks.

Months passed and the day of the Board exam result arrived. You would not believe but Akash Scored 99 marks in physics. How was that even possible? Both I and Akash really didn’t get any idea about that. The reason I can think of was the neatness in the exam paper. He was sure with the questions he solved and thus he had no cuttings. I think that has made an impact on the examiner.
But this incident made one thing very clear that there are no strict rules and processes in Evaluation, everything we think about the evaluation process is a myth or mystery, no one exactly knows that how the evaluation process gets done.

The Bad Face Of Evaluation Process Of CBSE Board

The above story must have made you a bit happy as there was a good face of the evaluation process, But wait! there are always two faces of a coin. The evaluation process is not good for everyone, like me, there are a number of victims of this questionable process. It would be really happening if such negligence is avoided by CBSE in coming years as it mocks those who work hard for getting good grades.

I am an M.Sc(chemistry) student now, chemistry is my key subject, and in my 12th class, I used to be the topper in chemistry in every test. During the board exam of chemistry in my class 12th, I attempted all the questions with correct answers and I checked my answer sheet thrice just to ensure that I haven’t left something.

I was 100% sure that I will score 100 out of 100 marks in chemistry. And when the result was declared I secured only 95 marks, I still don’t have any idea, that what happened to those 5 marks?.

So, here is the crystal clear face of the evaluation process of the CBSE Board for the 12th class. I won’t say that this system is a fault, but one thing I must say that, there is no full transparency in the evaluation process, no-one can really estimate his/her marks on the basis of exams given by them.

How the CBSE Evaluation Process Works?

let me make it more clear about the evaluation process by telling you the steps involved in this process.

What really happens with your answer sheet, after you leave the exam? have you ever questioned about this? if yes then follow me.

There are two methods involved in the evaluation process of CBSE.

  1. Digital Evaluation
This is a newly added system for evaluating the answer sheets, in this process a scanned copy of your answer sheet is uploaded to a server and then sent to a particular checker around India.
The advantage of this process is that there is no need to move your answer sheets from one place to another, it can be simply served to any teacher(Checker) in India.
Every checker has a unique id, on the basis of which the answer sheets are allotted to them, and then after evaluating the answer sheet the assigned teacher confirms that he/she has checked the answer sheet.
This process is not everywhere yet, because this process is time-consuming as checking the answer sheet on a computer screen takes a lot more time than manual checking.
  2. Manual Evaluation
This is a traditional method, and you must be aware of a bit of this process. All the answer sheets from different examination centers are collected and sent to their regarded checking centers where the evaluation process takes place.
Some government teachers and some private teachers are hired for the evaluation process, the answer sheets are then divided among the checkers and then a manual checking process takes place. According to my English teacher, once she told me that a single checker checks 40+ copies in 6 hours.
Now just think how can it be so perfect when a single teacher is checking 40+ copies in just 6 hours.
You can now create an idea about the evaluation process, and I am sure about this.

Must Tips To Score Good In Evaluation Process

As I stated above the evaluation system is a myth, imagine yourself as an answer sheet checker. You are checking 40+ copies every 6 hours and doing this process for a month or two.

Obviously, you will get bored at some time, and at that time you won’t notice the silly mistakes done by the students in the answer sheets. What you will notice is only the formatting, presentation, markup, writing, etc. and on the basis of these things, you will decide some of the marks without going through the whole answer written by the student.

This is real, we all are human and we cannot do the same work again and again for a long time. So follow my tips to make sure that you are not going to be a victim of the evaluation process.

  1. Even if your answer sheet is crap, make it neat and clean, use great handwriting. Write some stuff related to the question, underline the important terms. Simply, make your answer sheet so neat that anyone who sees it feels great.
  2. Make your handwriting clearer to read, do not make the checker confuse over your answers while reading them, keep good gaps between the words so that the checker has to do less work on reading your answer.
  3. Remember, the lesser the hard work the checker has to do while evaluating your answer sheet, the more will be the marks you score.

Bonus Tip

If you ever feel like, you are not gonna make some of your exams successfully then you can repeat a question 2 times. But let me tell you how to do this.

This totally depends on your luck, because in the evaluation process there is a caging system, which means after checking your answer to a particular question the marks you obtained on that question is assigned in a table having question numbers with its marks column.

Pick a question on which you are sure the answer is correct, do it at the beginning of your answer sheet. and do the same question at the end of your answer sheet by replacing its number with some other question.

If you will have good luck then hopefully you can get double marks for the same question, only if the checker hasn’t noticed that trick.

  1. Don’t take much tension, prepare maths with NCERT and RD Sharma, chemistry with ncert by making notes, physics by Nootan with good notes. Don’t leave any derivation by this you can got 95 to 99 marks.

  2. Hello sir
I’ve appeared for CBSE class XII Board Exam this year.
Every exam was a big hit and i’m expecting 90 in Eco. and 95 in english and business.studies and physical education. But i’m quite worried for my accounts paper,no doubt it was easy but was very lenghty, calculations were tricky,Cuz if which 3 marker’s also consumed more than the expected time, majority of the student was left in tears Cuz of non-completion of paper and they’ve left 15-20 marks questions.
Sir i’ve attempted each and every question’s thou i’m unable to complete last ques.. that’s different thing. Can i expect some marks for attmepted ques.. and linency in checking as paper was really very lenghty.

  3. I have written a correct code no. But I doubt in set no. Is there any problem?

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

Rishabh, there should not be any problem, as you have written the correct code. But there is no harm in confirming it, so I will suggest you to consult the authorities.

  4. In my physics paper I did first two questions (1 mark each) wrong, will it put a bad impression on the checker? so, will he check my even correct answers strictly assuming me to be a weak student? I am very tensed about it.

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hi Simi,
Just relax, if your answers are correct, then no one will deduce your marks for nothing.

  5. Don’t worry about passing marks…
CBSE declared to have easy checking. Even they decided to give 1 mark for attempted questions. So, if you have attempted 35 questions, then you can easily pass.

  6. Hello!
I have just given my painting exam and just a little bit portion of my sheet got tear (just a little bit not big). Is there any difficulty I will face?

  7. Sir, I have done all my subjects well. In physics and chemistry, I have done almost all questions right, while in maths about 90% were right. But, the main issue is that my writing is not that well, and even I have made some cuttings too (especially in physics).
So, will it cause a major effect on my marks?

  8. Sir, my syllabus of 12th jee is complete, but I know after completing the syllabus there should be infinite practice to make our hard work effective. But, whenever I open my 12th syllabus, I do not find any interest in those repeated topics. I don’t know this time in which manner I have to study. I only heard from my teachers, that Jee mains is only of smart studies. Can you give me some tips on how I can proceed for my effective studies?

  9. I have done a silly mistake in chemistry exam of attempting both parts of 5 marks question, and a part of 1 of the question is wrong.
I am very confused what will the examiner do?
I think all other answers of mine are correct.

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hey! RS,
According to the rule, the question that you have attempted first will be considered, and marks will be given accordingly. But, you never know, may be examiner will consider the right one.

  10. Hello! I had done something a bit wrong, unfortunately in the starting of my cbse class 12th maths paper, I wrote only 6 pages, then I left 7 pages blank, i thought i will write in them in the last minutes, then till last page I have written completely. I want to ask you sir, is there any problem? while checking that, will teachers not check after those starting 6 pages? will they check each and every blank page also?
    sir, please reply fast.

  11. Hello sir,
finally I found someone who could make me feel stress free.
I am sanyam jain frm jaipur.
first of all sir in English paper, I had 15 min only, so I could arrange for 1 page of article. I am not sure about words, as i have not counted, but being a 10 marks question, i feel that is the biggest mistake i have committed, because except this my full paper is correct. please tell me sir, how they will check articles? and in physics I am expecting 85 to 90, is there any chance for getting 90 plus, because I wrote a 5 marks question wrong.
Sir please tell me, in physics do we get marks for steps because I wrote formula right, but did blunder in calculation.
And sir, in chemistry I am expecting at least 93, is there any chance for 95?
    thankyou so much!

  13. Thanks Sir! and last year the ACC paper was quite easy and everyone did very well, do you think they will make this year’s paper very hard?

  14. I have filled wrong roll number in words in my English and physics paper. My roll number is 7607400 but i have filled seventy six lakh seventy four thousand. Is this a major mistake?

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hi! Sonu,
If you have written the roll no. correctly in numbers, then i don’t think there should be any issue, but still you should consult your school authorities to be on safe side.

  15. Hi, in the Chemistry 2016 Board Exam ( it was supposedly easy) – I somehow messed up around 18 marks. On the contrary, in Physics I made silly errors upto 5-7 marks. I am very worried about the checking and I also kept my presentation very neat both Physics and Chemistry. Is there a way I could somehow get above 90 in both? – Distressed.

  16. Hey I am a science student with maths and right now I am giving my 12th CBSE boards. I had given my physics and chemistry paper. I found them very easy. But I am scared because in physics I attempted all the questions but I made few silly mistakes and didn’t made diagram neat and clean. Whereas in chemistry, I made many silly mistakes.
I got confused in many small questions. I counted my marks in both the subjects and it is around 53 to 55. I am worried that I will get below 50 out of 70. But I don’t want to get marks above 50 so I can score above 80 out of 100. I am really tensed because till 10th I was in ICSE board and then I shifted to CBSE. So I want to score above 80 in 12th boards.
I am really worried about maths though I completed all the sums of ncert. Please help.

    1. If you can get 27 to 28 out of 30 in practices then, you have good chances of getting 80 out of 100.

  17. Thanks for the reply (and the advice). Although, I was asking about the general results, like on an average, which subject do students generally score higher in: Economics or Psychology?
But I guess I will have to make the choice for myself.

  18. I absolutely loved that trick of repeating a sure shot question with a misleading question number.
Thanks. I’ll try it in my maths exam haha 🙂

  19. Hey, i have a doubt about my English exam.
In the literature section, out of total 24 marks, i wrote 2-2 lines answer for each question.
I’m worried that will they give me full marks or not? I did it a blunder while writing a report.
Instead of writing on discrimination of women in our country, i wrote on the topic of “Third Gender”.
    Will CBSE GIve me marks?

And in my physics exam, I didn’t write well.
It was totally alien to me. When I counted my marks, I ended up at 14 marks.
I’m really scared! Will I pass in my physics exam?

    1. In english you will get some marks of correct formatting and presentation even if you have written the answer different from the question in writing section.
Also, in physics if you could make up to 17 marks, and you haven’t left any question(correct or incorrect) then you can get the grace marks from the checker. Thank you.

  20. I am a commerce student. I gave my business exam. It was quite difficult because 55% of the questions were case study.
I did all the question except one. And according to me I’ll get 85 or above. Can I get more marks as I had written a lot. Attached two supplementary sheets. Moreover in my English exam I did a mistake by doing a lot cutting. First I made my advertisement and letter format wrong but I corrected it by doing it again. So will it effect my marks?? A bit worried about that.

    1. Even I did two cuttings in the english exam. scraping off entire format because of misreading the quesion. I dont know how many marks will they cut for cutting off?

  21. Question: 1
In your article you talked about the evaluation process. I heard somewhere that three examiners correct each paper, but nowhere in your article have you mentioned about it. So, is it true what I heard? If yes, then there’s greater risk of the second/third examiner to find faulty answers that the first examiner missed.

    Question: 2
Is it true that you get more than what you expect in cbse board exams? That did happen to me in 10th standard, but I don’t know what’s going to happen this year.
Also, if I’ve done excellent in other subjects but performed too bad in physics, will CBSE be lineint enough to give grace marks in physics?
What is the maximum possible marks one can get in English?

    Question: 3
I just gave my physics and English exam for 12th cbse boards. There was this question to plot a graph and draw a diagram in two of the questions. I drew them partially right. Will I get half marks for that? or will they give me zero?
Also, does cbse actually give zero to any answer? if most of it is wrong but, none the less, attempted.
Finally, can you please tell me if cbse gives full in writing if you’ve presented well and used nice expressions?

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hello! Keerthi,
You took that “asking your query” part quite seriously! Just kidding. Below are the answers to all your questions One by One.
      Answer: 1
Yes! their might be some chances that the copies are checked by three examiners sometimes but the other two generally check the caging table (proper marking). And they do not give that deep look to any answer (unless you are very unlucky).
      Answer: 2
It depends on the examiner weather you will get more than expected marks or less. If you are passed in all the subject, and lagging behind just by couple of marks, then you can be given grace marks to pass in 1 subject. You can score 90’s in English if you have done very well.
      Answer: 3
You will get something if you have written at least some part of the answer right. And yes, if the answer is totally illogical to the question asked, then you can get 0.
You can expect to get full marks if you write the correct answer in subjects other than language subjects. But, still you never know what the examiner is thinking.

    2. Well, this is certain that I’m not failing in any of the subjects. What I want to know is that if my total percentage turns out to be 89 or something will cbse give grace marks and make it 90 at least. That goes by saying if I’m getting in 90s in the four subjects but in physics-80s.

    3. And I checked cbse marking scheme for physics. It allots 1 or sometimes 2 whole marks for circuit diagrams and graphs. So if I’ve drawn them partially right, I’ll get half marks or zero? The examiner is supposed to adhere to the answer key right? Do they strictly follow?

    4. I need to ask one more thing sir.
In my chemistry exam , while checking the answers I found one of them was wrong, so I wrote it again properly on the last page, but didn’t cancel the wrong answer that I’d written initially. I mean I just put a small cross mark adjacent to the question paper. So, they’ll consider the wrong answer, or the right one? My friends were telling me that the examiner ignores the answer that is repeated and will consider only the first one.

    5. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

It totally depends on the examiner, if he/she pays attention to the right answer that you have written on the last page, then you will probably get the marks for right answer. But, if it does not happen, then probably your wrong answer will be considered.
Don’t you worry, chances are that your right answer will be considered.

  22. I recently gave my physics exams. It was not so tough but I did lots of mistakes in numerical, even I wrote the derivation of other topic in answer. But I tried to attempt questions as possible. Theoretical questions I didn’t leave. Will I be able to pass that exams. I am not sure about it. it’s not that I didn’t studied for that exam but I was so confused and panicked that I made lots of mistakes. Will checker check my answer sheet strictly or leniently. what type of checking is done in physics
    Also,
Can I be able to score more than 90 marks in English?? My English exam went well. I am sure I will be able to score more than 80. What type of checking is done in English

    1. Do not think so much about the evaluation process. read the article, all the points written are applicable to every subject. Best and only thing you can do is wait for the result.

  23. I’ve written English and Physics 12th CBSE Board Exam as of now. I’ve done the same mistake in both the papers. In our answer sheet, we had to write and bubble our name. The instruction given by the board was that we must leave a gap/space between two parts of the name and bubble accordingly. If your name is exceeding 24 letters, write whatever is fitting.
My complete name is NEEHAR PRASAD CHANDAVARKAR.

I was supposed to write and bubble it in “NEEHAR PRASAD CHANDAVARK” this way.
But I bubbled it in “NEEHARPRASADCHANDAVARKAR” this way.

Will I suffer from any problem
Will I get marks for these two papers?

    1. Hi Neehar.
This is not really a big problem, this happens with lot of students. Your roll number matters the most in that OMR sheet, if you have put your roll number correctly then the evaluator will find your name corresponding to your roll number in their records.
But still, please consult to the higher authorities regarding your situation.
      Thank you.

  24. Srinidhi Hariharan

I have completed my physics exam today. I did it well though it was quite tough. I expect a mark of 90+. But i’m worried about few questions, which i had to cook up due to lack of time. But i have a great handwriting and a neat presentation too. Will i be able to score 95?

    1. Writing and presentation do not impact marks a lot in case of physics, chemistry, and maths. What matters in these subjects are your answers or solutions. But yes, good presentation of your answer sheet will bring you benefits for sure.

  25. Today i gave my business studies exam . Everything went right, but the main problem was that i attempted one question of 6 marks wrong in hurry. But i attempted it well. I just want to ask that, will the examiner give any marks or not?

    1. Prof. Rajeev Mehra

      Hello! Neha,
If you have mentioned all the steps right and clearly, then even if your answer is wrong, you will get something for it.
So, don’t worry and prepare for your next exam.

  26. Hey, today I gave my English exam. Everything went fine but I am apprehensive about the article I wrote. I deviated from the topic and wrote something which I had crammed before exam as it was important. I don’t know what happened to me, the topic was how to make women safe And what I wrote was – role of women outside or home. I didn’t even read question properly (due to lack of time) and wrote something else in haste. Little similarity was there between the two articles. Please tell me how many marks will be deducted out of 10. And do they even read articles? I am very depressed!
*note- I did it in last.
    Thank you

    1. You have good writing skills, as i can see in your comment. Evaluations of writing section of English is not only about the correct answers but also about the formatting, spelling, grammar, and writing skills.
So I guess, if you have done proper formatting then the least you can get is 5 marks out of 10, and if everything goes well then you may even score 8 marks.
Riya it will be a great help for the next year’s students, if you could send us the snaps of your English question paper to our mailbox, which is: 4ono.com@gmail.com
      Thank you.

  27. Thank you so much for this kind of tips given by you. Now i feel really free for exams

  28. What should we try to do before 2 or 3 days are remaining for our 12th board exam. If all chapters are practiced and memorised. How can we score upto 90% in board. Please give me the tips which make my confidence level high.

    1. Dear kaushik,
It would be great if you really complete and revise your syllabus and still have 2 to 3 days.
To keep things fresh, you can plan a group study with your friends and try to explain them what you know, explaining things to other makes your concept more clear and also they last for long time in minde.
And do not forget to practice sample papers and previous years papers, they will prove to be very useful. You can download the sample papers and previous years papers by visiting our sample papers category present at the top of the header, or you can simply click on the given link.

  29. If someone has completed, practiced and memorised every question from 2015-2006 previous years question papers on your website and also some other things related to these questions and all the basic points of the subjects, what will be his performance in the boards? I mean will he be able to score 85+? That he is actually me.

    1. Thanks for asking Kshitiz,
See, if you haven’t prepared anything yet then this will be a quite tough game to score 85+ from the previous year papers, although if you are lucky enough that you face same questions in your board exam as you will practice in previous year question papers then yes it is possible to score great marks.
But, with no doubt, the best policy is to complete the syllabus first and then go for the sample and previous year papers.
As per your comment Kshitiz, its look like that you haven’t prepared anything yet(Just a guess, please don’t mind), so as the last option you can solve sample and previous year question papers without having any doubt as much as you can but with full focus, definitely, you can get good percentage, it’s not that much hard to achieve.

  30. Is there any chance to improve basic english, as my english is so weak that it does not let me fetch good marks in exams. After 1 month my board exams are going to begin. Is there any way?

    1. Dear Kaushik,
firstly let me tell you that your English is not that bad as you think, i have seen much worst. So just relax and take it easy.

As far as marks are concerned then you will be happy to know that, other than English there is no subject in which marks are deducted for your writing language. It’s your knowledge and quality of answer that is considered.

But please note that you keep your writing and answer formating neat and clean as they may help you get few more marks or other way round.

And now for the improving part, here are some tips that may help you improve you English. Well! they helped me, hope you too will get the same results.

Read English newspapers and other stuff like magazine, comics etc.

Watch English movies and listen to English songs. Use headphones for effective results.

Find people with whom you can speak in English, but make sure they are of your level, because you may not feel comfortable if the other person is better than you.

If there is no one with whom you can talk then speak to yourself. I use to talk to myself in private moments like in bathroom etc.

Finally, always remember that to speak in English you have to think in English. Most people first think a sentence in Hindi and then translate it to English, and this is where they are wrong.

there are multiple ways of saying a sentence, and you won’t find them untill you keep on thinking in Hindi. So try to directly make sentences in English.

These tips are hard to follow but if you do then you will definitely improve.
